Ten Years of Diplomacy Beyond Borders: MUN-UPD Marks a Decade of Growth

From its founding in 2016, Model United Nations – University of the Philippines Diliman has grown into a community of over 150 members, hundreds of alumni, and a flagship conference that draws delegates from across the world. This April 2026, the organization celebrates its 10th anniversary—a decade since its inception—in which it has ingrained diplomacy, critical dialogue, and global engagement skills in the minds of young Filipinos.

What began as a competitive delegation representing UP Diliman in various Model United Nations conferences has since grown into one of the country's most active and visible student organizations in international relations. Today, Model United Nations – UP Diliman (MUN-UPD) counts more than 150 active members and a network of 85 alumni who have gone on to careers in public service, diplomacy, research, and advocacy. With a combined audience of 7,500 followers across Facebook and Instagram, connections with over 14 colleges and institutes, and partnerships with more than 125 organizations, the organization's reach extends far beyond the walls of any committee room.

MUN-UPD’s 10th year anniversary theme, "Growth Beyond Borders," captures not just how the organization has come, but how much farther it is determined to go.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Formally established in 2016, MUN-UPD has always centered itself on the conviction that international relations are vital to the progressive growth of nations. The organization has always sought to create an impact outside of just winning awards—to be something bigger than being the university’s official delegation for conferences.

From the beginning, MUN-UPD sought to be something more: a home for students who wanted to engage with the world's most pressing issues, not just inside committee sessions, but through engaging with the issues plaguing society, both globally and locally. That spirit of purpose-driven engagement has been the constant thread running through the organization's first ten years.

A COMMUNITY BUILT ON MORE THAN DEBATE

What sets MUN-UPD apart is the breadth of its offerings, not just for its members but for society at large.

The Philippine International Model United Nations (PHIMUN), the organization's flagship conference, gathers hundreds of delegates from national and international institutions each year for high-level simulations of United Nations bodies. It is widely regarded as the premier MUN conference in the country.

Beyond the conference floor, the organization runs a robust calendar of year-round initiatives.

In celebration of the United Nations Month, MUN-UPD holds the UN Month Forum every October, bringing together students, professionals, and experts to shed light on pressing global issues and incite discussion on their implications. It creates a space for meaningful dialogue on how global situations affect and intersect with conditions that we experience in the country. Last October 2025, the forum was centered on the theme “The Struggle of the Fourth Estate: The Role of the Media in the Global Struggle for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,” which emphasized the important role of journalism in upholding truth, accountability, and human dignity amid the crises that currently prevail in our society.

Another platform where members and alumni alike can share their knowledge and opinions on international and political matters is the MUNute brief. MUN-UPD’s official research and publication initiative provides an avenue for critical discourse to proliferate, offering a space for pressing matters to be explored in a new light, highlighting the role of the youth in expanding and deepening conversations on diplomacy, governance, and global issues.

Through various initiatives like the MUN Masterclass, the MUNtorship Program, and Embassy and Institutional Visits, the organization equips its members, stakeholders, and its community with valuable skills, knowledge, and insights that go beyond the classroom, ensuring that its participants excel in their chosen paths.

The expanse of the various platforms where MUN-UPD proliferates diplomacy doesn’t end with projects and advocacies; it even extends into physical products. Through UP Gone Global, MUN-UPD’s official merchandise line, identity, pride, and global awareness shine on various apparel and items that celebrate diplomacy, leadership, and youth empowerment. Through these pieces, members, alumni, and supporters can carry the spirit of diplomatic service that MUN-UPD possesses wherever they go.

CELEBRATING THE DECADE: THE DECADE OF DIPLOMATIC INITIATIVES

This year, as MUN-UPD celebrates its 10th anniversary, the theme that guides the celebration, “Celebrating a Decade of Growth Beyond Borders,” acknowledges the milestones and achievements that have brought the organization to where it is today, while looking forward to the continued expansion of its reach and impact. For MUN-UPD, the tenth year is not a conclusion—it is a milestone on a longer journey.

To mark the occasion, the organization has organized the Decade of Diplomacy Initiatives, a month-long series of commemorative activities rooted in the spirit of being united in difference.

In the spirit of diplomacy grounded in compassion, members and volunteers are given an opportunity to serve the youth. Safe Haven Community Center and Children’s Home welcomed the members and volunteers warmly as they spent a day with the children, filled with fun activities and meaningful community service rooted in ideals that the UN champions, such as human dignity, social development, and protection of vulnerable communities.

The organization will also hold the Diplomatic Banquet, a night that honors the 10 years of milestones and achievements that MUN-UPD has garnered, and the people who have made all of it possible. The banquet will bring together members, alumni, and partners to honor the decade's contributions and renew their shared commitments.

MUN-UPD’s impact has undeniably reached far beyond the university. Thus, the MUNumental Series aims to celebrate the alumni who continue to carry the advocacies of MUN-UPD in the workforce and feature their journeys across various fields, celebrating the lasting impact the organization has had beyond the university.

Throughout this celebration, the MUNute Brief will continue to uphold the commitment that MUN-UPD held for the past 10 years—a commitment to knowledge-sharing and public discourse that fosters awareness and dialogue on matters that shape the global community.

TEN YEARS, AND COUNTING

Looking back, MUN-UPD's growth has been both broad and deep. Broad in the sense that it has reached more students, more schools, and more communities than its founders could have imagined in 2016. Deep in the sense that it has shaped the way its members think, speak, lead, and act, not just as delegates, but as citizens.

The organization's vision remains what it has always been: to be the home for current and future leaders committed to creating the very changes they wish to see in the world. After ten years, that vision is not just a statement on a page. It is a record, written in the careers of its alumni, the resolutions drafted by its delegates, the conversations sparked by its forums, and the communities touched by its outreach.

As MUN-UPD enters its second decade, the only direction it knows is forward—and beyond.
